Hi

You can buy 'Lakshmi gada cloth' from Nalli (used to be Rs.20 a mtr) and 'prime' it to get the cheapest canvas. For Primer you need a few kilos of Zinc Oxide (available in all hardware shops @ Rs. 10 per kg) mixed with a tin of fevicol and water to paint consistency and paint the gada cloth and leave it overnight for drying. Gada cloth is yellowish in colour and priming with zinc oxide mixture gives it a non-porous matte-white surface to paint on. Your canvas is now ready!

Suggest you use only Acrylic paints bought in tins, as they dry faster and use water as thinner, so not a messy affair for group painting. Oil paints take a week to dry completely, and uses linseed oil as thinner, which could turn out to be very messy.

Acrylic or oil paints leave a permanent stain on floor, so you might want to be careful not to spill on absorbent floor materials.

Brushes could be bought from hardware shops (cheaper than artists brushes, and could be use-and-throw types), but nothing better than using a pair of gloved hands to splash colours, its more fun!

Enjoy!

Hi Kiruba,

Thats a wonderful idea!

White Chart papers, pastel crayons(camlin or faber castel), poster colors (camlin), sketch pens, brushes (various sizes), paper cups, paper plates (one side laminated ones) to mix colors.

You can get them from Hindustan art emporium, Egmore. You can get most of these items in any good stationary shop.

Kiruba, don't try to start with canvas. You would waste canvas. First try with the chart papers and then switch to canvas when you are confident. Chart papers will be smooth in one side and rough in other side. Use the rough side. If you go the stationary shop (quite a big one), you can find a lot of painting materials like colours for painting in glass, pottery. If you can also try the pottery one. I suppose you may have pottery to keep plants in your house. You can try with them first.

Anitha, actually it'll just be a potpourri of random colors. I'm sure we can pass it off euphemistically as 'Modern Painting'! :)
