Bicycle Month
Apparently, May was
'Bike Month' where people are encouraged to pedal to work. Hmmm... for me, every month is a bike month ! :)
Belated Birthday Wishses, Doughboy.
Pillsbury Doughboy, the character with the ticklish tummy and a chef's cap, turned 40 this week.
Gosh! 40 years old, eh!. No wonder it's one of the better recognized brand character around.

BusinessWorld Covers Blogging :
And I get a small mention
Rashmi Bansal's article on Blogging in BusinessWorld is probably one of the better articles to hit the mainstream media. Given the limit of two pages, she's done a decent job of giving a good overview.
Check out Page 56 in this month's BusinessWorld deadwood edition. The online version, however, is only for subscribers.
It shows that it helps to be a blogger to write an article on blogging. Rashmi who is the editor of JAM magzine (and an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus), blogs at
YouthCurry.
However, if there's one peeve that I've got its this habit of not mentioning URLs of blogs in the article. It somehow doesn't make the article look complete. That's like a cricket radio commentator not mentioning the scores.
I get a one line mention towards the end of the article which kinda gives away my Adsense earnings!
One More Way to Increase Your Google Adsense Revenue
Did you know that you can now add Google Adsense to your site's RSS feeds? Yup, and from what I've been reading, it does complement your earnings. Read more about
'Adsense for Feeds'.
How Jyothika Helped My Daughter. And even Jyothika doesn't know about it. Let me explain. My three and half year old daughter has this chronic thumb suckling habit. For the past two years, me and my wife have been struggling to make her let go off the habit. We were partly succesful, thanks to my wife's persistence, but couldn't fully stop the habit.
Recently, my daughter saw Chandramukhi and was shit scared of the close up shots of the possesed Jyothika. A cousin of mine had threathed her that everytime she sucked her thumb, Chandramukhi would appear to torment her. That seemed to have had a big effect on her. Now, she's near totally stopped the habit.
You are reading a very relieved man's blog! :)

Free Wi-Fi = Happier Customers = More Money
Radisson GRT, a 5 star hotel in Chennai, is offering Wi-Fi for free to all its patrons. Finally, someone figured that this is such a valuable value addition.
Broadband Internet connectivity has become pretty affordable nowadays (by 5 star hotel standards, I mean) and it makes sense to give it gratis. It's like using the small fish to get bigger fish. The payback in terms of customer satisfaction will be very high.
Folks at Taj, you hearing? You are shooting at your own foot when you charge Rs.200 per hour.
Wow! Rs.90,000 a Day Though Google Ads!!

Yup! Time to turn green, fellas.
Jason Calacanis' blogs are earning him just a notch below $2000 everyday. Yes,
*EVERYDAY*.
That's Rs.90,000 every single day. That's Rs.28 lakhs every month. That's Rs.3.35 crores every year.
Holy Geez! And all that just via blogs!
And all this, just within the last seven months. That's Rs.0 to Rs.90,000 per day just in the last seven months.
Holy cow!
It takes guts to reveal this sort of financial statistics. It's info like this that acts as a catalyst to the industry. It feeds hope and passion to a lot of folks.
Why Niche Blogs Will Succeed
Over the weekend, I went over to the Maruti Suzuki Showroom which is right around the corner of my home to check out the newly launched Swift. Sure enough, the car was good (read fabulous) and I wanted to learn more. The first thing that hit my mind was
DriveBlog, a niche blog that covers only cars. It wasn't Autodrive or AutoCar magazomes. Sure, I would've checked them out eventually but what matters is what strikes you first.
Commercialization still hasn't laid its dirty hands on blogs unlike magazines. So, what I read is fairly unbiased opinion and that's what I want to hear.
As for revenues, take a good look at the Google ads in the site. The last five times I checked, the ads featured the Swift cars. Hey, I'm there to learn about Swift and I see ads on Swift. Is that bang on or what. Fancy the chances of clicks happening. Even though clicks may not be coming in droves, it eventually will when the site establishes credibility and familiarity.
I have known Navneet Potti, the guy who runs DriveBlog, personally. (We were colleagues at Sify). When he quit his personal blog and later started DriveBlog, I had my doubts. Now, I'm convinced that niche is the way.
Don't see the tree. Not the branches. Not the bird. Aim for the eye. Yeah, the eye. The nicher the subject is, the better. And excel in it.
I've seen it in Ganesh's
Rupya.com and Rafat's
PaidContent. Read my lips, guys. Niche blogs are the way to go.
A Blog Conference for Women
Hey, I know that women make up nearly half of the blogging population. But do we have to have a separate
conference for women? I mean, isn't blogging unisex?! :)
Anyways, I like the name for the conference. Neat.
It looks a little odd to project the conference for women and then say Men are also welcome. Almost like a second thought! Jus' kidding :)
Quiz Foundation of India's Open Quiz 2005 This SundayIt looks like QFI (Quiz Foundation of India) is finally getting on to the professional quizzing bandwagon. While the Chennai chapter of QFI holds its fortnightly competitons, it has completely been overshadowed by the big name quizzes like Brand Equity Quiz, Landmark's Independence Day Quiz and Odyssey Quiz. QFI has the best quizzing brains I've known and it's finally good to see it expanding it's horizons with Open Quiz 2005.
I'm definitely participating in this quiz. Will be forming a team of three from my company.
Here are the important details of the quiz.
Date: 5th of June 2005 (Sunday)
Schedule: Prelims - 3:00 p.m. and Finals - 5:00 p.m.
Team size: Maximum of 3 members
Venue: Central Lecture Theatre (CLT),Humanities and Sciences Block (HSB)(opposite the Open Air Theatre(OAT))Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras
Fee : Rs.Zero
More information on the quiz at
Vinod's blog, the quizmaster of the event.
I've also known quite a few quizzers when I used to organize the Intra-Tidel quiz competitions. It'll be a good opportunity to meet up with the folks.
If you are even remotely interested in quizzes, I suggest you come participate in the quiz. I mean, you have nothing to lose. Go on, form a team and hop in. It'll be fun.

An Unbeaten Century : The Day When I Wasn't Myself. This should definitely be my best day in Cricket. I scored an unbeaten century today against a stronger team. It was a match between two departments within Sify. (It's professional leather ball cricket, not the tennis ball one).
I captained the International Business Team while
Somu captained the Technololgy Team.
( It was a coincidence that both the captains were bloggers).
After the innings, I went over to look at the scorecard and this is how my innings was built.
Kiruba : 1,4,1,4,2,4,6,4,4,2,4,1,6,1,2,1,1,4,1,1,6,6,4,4,1,4,4,1,1,4,1,4,6 (100 Not Out)That's an impressive 14 boundaries and 5 sixes. Not bad for a guy who isn't a regular cricketer.
We scored 189 for four in 20 overs while we rescricted the opponents to 161 for 9. After the match, I collected the scorecard as a memoir. The point is, I usually don't play this well. This definitely has been my day.
Maybe I should thank the daily cycling and marathon practice. On a hot humid day when everyone seemed to wilt in the heat, I felt great at the ground. My physical endurance surprised even me.
However, the best part of the day was when the teams got together for chilled beer. Trust me, cold beer after an exhauting day is what I'd call mannah from heaven.
We have another match against Enterprise Applications SBU lined up on June 11th. I hope the success doesn't get to our head.

Proof of Anita's impressive photography talent. That's the silhouette of me. She shot this off a reflection of a mirror during the
Bangalore Marathon Bloggers Meet. Do check out the
rest of her snaps at Flickr.
Seeking Help : Know a Digital Camera Service Centre? My digital camera is dead. Reason for death : It got wet in the rain. This happened a couple of months ago. Partly because of my love for cycling in the rain. Only when I reached office did I realise neither my bag nor the camera pouch is water proof. Anyways, the point is, it is dead.
I took it to the 'Camera Service Centre' ( Yes, that's the full name of the shop), which seems to be the only Canon authorized service centre in Chennai. After two days of keeping it with them, they said they can't repair it. Technically speaking , they can. But that would cost me Rs.8500 just for the repair. The guy didn't wait for me to say I might as well put in a little more dough and buy a new camera.
Well, I can't. The frivolous reason is because I'm sentimentally attached to this camera. The real reason is, I don't want to spend another 14 grand to buy a new one.
So, here's the help I'm seeking from you. Would you know any person or shop which services digital cameras either in Chennai, Hyderabad or Bangalore? Something in me tells me that this camera can be brought back to life. Why? Because I know a friend, Karthik, who dropped his Canon camera
in the Kodaikanal lake and now his camera is working fine.
His camera conked off but was repaired back to its original condition. When a camera which lay submerged at the bottom of a lake for over 10 minutes can survice, I'm sure a camera which just got wet in the rain can.
Feed me hope, guys. Thanks.

Currently Reading
Life of Pi by Yann Martel. This novel has elements of Pondicherry in it and that alone was reason enough for me to pick it up. Oh! Winning the Man Booker prize also helped!
Comic Strip for Geeks
A good way to easen those Monday morning blues. Hans has started a weekly comic strip that makes fun of geeks and their computer related lives. It looks like Bugbash will be for Technology the way Dilbert is for Management.

Right now, this is the only strip
on the site. But judging from it and the way the intoduction is written, we can expect to see some good stuff. This will definitely be a Monday regular for me.

Evam Indrajit
Chennai's oldest and the youngest theatre group are joining hands to bring along an original play. Madras Players and Evam are coming up with 'Evam Indrajit'.
I should credit Evam with igniting my interest in theatre. They are an awesome group. I so totally liked their 'Barefoot In The Park' that I decided to definitely catch up with their future plays.
Here's the schedule : June 4, 5, 11, 12 at 7.15 pm and special matinee shows on 5,12 at 2 pm. Venue : Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium, Alwarpet.
They are also performing in Mumbai & Bangalore.
July 13,14 - 9 pm at Prithvi, Juhu, Mumbai

Ah! Scrabble !!

Scrabble had been one of my favorite indoor activities during my school days. The interest in it got rekindled when we bought a new board today at work to have a little fun. It's been ages since I last played but one look at the board & the little plastic letters and I got hooked right into it.
This could well be the start of the Scrabble season in my Apartment. The kids in the apartment are on summer vacation and they are raring to go. I'm organising a Scrabble competition this Sunday and it should be good fun.

The Nth Chennai Bloggers MeetOk, I lost track of the number of blogger meets. But frankly, it doesn't matter. Every blog meet I attend is something I look forward to. Interesting new people to meet up and make friends with. Baring a few, I was meeting most of the folks for the first time.
This evening, we met up at Java Green, the small cofee shop inside Reliance Web World shop on Panagal Park, T.Nagar. I usually don't prefer coffee places for such meets 'coz the big crowd had to squeeze in and have to shout to be heard over the noisy music. And oh, not to mention the over priced bad tasting coffees. But thankfully this time, had a wonderful tasting hazelnut cold coffe.
The meet was a well attended one and as usual we totally usurped the place. Unusually though, there were girls. Most importantly, two who had come down from Singapore for vacations.
After coffee,we hopped over to the ice cream shop below. Overall, a thumbs up for a nice evening.

Bangalore Bloggers Meet : Late Edition Report I attended the meet barely hours after I finished the gruelling 41 km marathon. My legs were hurting real bad (and so did other parts of the body), but all that was forgotten in the midst of such bubbly folks.
One reason why I always look forward to blogger meets is because by nature most bloggers are very outgoing and very extrovertish. Your mood pumps up. It's amazing how quickly the ice gets broken. (
You got me at 'Hi'!!). Barely minutes into the meet, we were already pulling legs and making fun of folks.
It was during the Bangalore trip that I missed my camera the most. It conked off after it got wet in rain. Anyways, there were the good guys who brought along their digis.
Here's an assorted collection of pics.

There's an
awesome video that captures 360 degrees of the blog meet from Muthu's new cam. Don't miss it. (
God bless his bandwidth usage, though! :) There are more photos from at
Krishna's,
Venkat's, and
Anand's. Expect to see new photos soon at
Anita's as well.

'How to Make Money through Your Blog' - Article in Digit Magazine

I get to have my paragraph of fame. Mithun Kadambai, the journalist, was researching on Adsense and called me up to ask for my views. I shared with him my experiences and learnings.
Check out Page 57 in this month's Digit Magazine. It's got a fairly well researched piece.
Digit does not publish its articles onlines. So I guess the only way is to buy the mag off the newstand or borrow one from a friend who subscribes. Hmm...alternatively I could scan it and host it online. Yeah, sounds like a better idea. Will work on it.

Tidbits from BangaloreI went over to check out Kanteevara Stadium, the venue for the start of the Bangalore Marathon. It's a good thing I checked out the venue in advance. It was here that the organizers tell me that the start time has been advanced by an hour to 6:00 a.m and I need to check in by 5:00 a.m !!
Holy cow! I could've easily missed the run.
I'm sleeping over at Shyam's &
Sathish's place. Fellow marathoners & bloggers. We are planning for a carbohydrates rich dinner. Will also be preparing our very own high powered lime juice concoction.
The clime at Bangalore is definitely more pleasant (as compared to Chennai). I hardly sweat even though the sun is shining high. Unfortunately, this may not be good for a marathon. Sweating is a natural cooling mechanism and the lack of it is gonna make things a trifle difficult.
Checked out Forum. Quite frankly, it's a dissapointment. I mean, it definitely didn't stand up to all the hype. I'd definitley rate Spencers anytime better. But yeah, one thing that Forum scores very high is the quality of crowd.
What's with this lazy attitude? I go to this Lipton's promotion stall outside Forum. They had huge tubs filled with Ice and bottles of Lipton ice tea. There were about half dozen guys in Lipton Tshirts lazing around and chatting. I go over and ask for a bottle and to my utter surprise, the guy says, "It's lunch time. Come after one hour"!. Hello? Can't you open a fricking bottle cap?
It didn't stop there. I go to this place called Sreeraj Lassi shop. It looks like a chain of speciality lassi joints. I was in a mood to drink cold buttermilk. So walk in and ask for one. He says, "We sell only Lassi. We don't sell buttermilk"! I'm like 'Duh!'. A speciality Lassi shop can't mix some water?? Pissed, I asked the guy for a Salt Lassi, and an extra glass. I poured some water, whipped it and drank it.

I'm in Bangalore This WeekendParticipating in the Bangalore Marathon. Will be running along with a gang of friends. I heard that the organizers have changed the route for the Marathon at the last minute. And worse, they have asked all shops to shut down along the route. Not the best way to take a closer look at Bangalore.
There's a
Bangalore Bloggers Meet happening on Sunday, at 4:00 p.m at Barista's on St.Marks Road. A very interesting set of people are attending it and am looking forward to meet the new folks.
Another important agenda is to dine at
Madhu's
Shiok restaurant. I've been promising for a full year and am finally doing it. After the bloggers' meet, a few of us are heading over here for dinner. The Chef is personally playing host to us!
I also have to check out the infamous Bangalore traffic for myself. During my college days there, it wasn't that bad. So, it'll be interesting to check out the level of deterioration. And yeah, got to check out The Forum' super mall to see if the
'Oohs & aahs' of folks who've seen it is justified.
2nd Tidel Park Orkut Meet on May 18th

A meet designed to break the walls between companies. A meet to encourage computer geeks to get away from their PCs and meet new people. A meet to forge new friendships.
Myself and Sakina, the vivacious girl at iNautix, are taking up the cudgels. We are organising an Orkut Meet on May 18th. Tidel Park may be the swankiest business adderss in town and may have the who's who of the software companies here. But we realise that most folks tend to move with their friends from their own companies. Here's a small attempt to break that mould.
So, if you are interested in jamming up, mark your calendar right now and shoot me an
email.
Day & Date : Wednesday, May 18th, 2005.
Time : 6:00 PM
Venue : Near Oasis Ice Cream shop, Food Court, Tidel Park
Contact number : Call me at 98415 97744.

STC India Wins 'Chapter of Distinction' Award - Second Year In A Row
At the
52nd International Annual Conference of STC (Society for Technical Communication) held at Seattle, USA, yesterday, the India Chapter got awarded the highly prestigious
'Chapter of Distinction Award' for the second year in succession. In addition to this award, we have also won the
'Award of Excellence'.
Mak Pandit, the president of the India Chapter sent the good news via SMS from Seattle as soon as he received the awards.
This is an awesome feeling. As the head of the Chennai chapter, I feel a sense of participation of having contributed my bit towards the awards. A huge hug to the representatives of the other Indian chapters and board members.
Fascinated by War MoviesIt's such a coincidence that the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II was celebrated recently. Personally for me, this seems to be the season of World War movies. The movies on the Vietnam war comes a close second.
Here are the movies I have watched so far.
Here are the movies queued up in my 'to-be-seen' list.

I was kinda lazy to link up the pages or add title to the pics. Most of these have been taken in from
IMDB's Top War Movies and EPinion's War Movies
recommendations.
Is there any more war movies you would recommend? I'd love to hear.

Kite FlyingYesterday, I relived one of my childhood memories. After nearly 20 years, I got my hands on a kite and believe me, the rush of adrenalin was just the same as when I was a kid.
I had taken my family out to Elliots Beach in Besant Nagar to spend the evening. There was this Kite Seller who was selling each piece for Rs.10. Buying one for my daughter was just an excuse! :) I think I had more fun between us!
Incidentally, it was in Besant Nagar I spent my childhood and it was in the same Elliots Beach where I last flew a kite nearly 20 years ago. Those were the days of 'Manja' and 'Deal'.
I remember as kids, we would collect bottles, put them into a cloth bag, and mash it fine with stones. We would then mix it with glue and apply the glass paste (called 'Manja') on a special thread we'd get from the 'Master's Potti Kadai'.
The challenge is to cut the opponent Kite's thread (This duel is called 'Deal') . And when you do cut it, and if luck and winds are your side, you get to collect the opponent's Kite as trophy.
Sigh! Those were the good times. And all those memories came gushing back to me as I held the kite yesterday.

Backpack 1.0 : An App Worth Checking Out
Backpack looks like a nifty little personal-information-organizer. The creators say there are a hundred useful things you can do like organizing To-Do lists, plan a project, set email reminders and
much more.
I'm just dirtying my hands with it. I'm particularly intersted in the project collaboration feature. There are a few ideas on my mind which I'd like to colloborate with other folks and this might be a good feature to try out.

Couple With A Good Sense of HumorYou know a couple on a honeymoon is having a good time when you see a
picture like this! Boy, love their attitude. :)
(Warning : May not be suitable for office viewing)
A Bottle of Pickle at Re.1It's the 21st century, yet some of the strange traditions hasn't left us. When we visited a relative's place, we gave them a bottle of pickle which my grandma had prepared. After we finished our two day visit at their place and about to leave, my aunt who is the host, thrust a one rupee coin in my wife's hand.
Apparently giving pickle to family members will create enemity amongst families. So by giving one rupee, you are actually
buying the stuff thus evading the bad omen. !!
Oh Boy!

I Married into a Movie Director's Family! Wow. :)
I just got to know that my wife's maternal Great Grandfather was a movie director. He has directed 10 movies in 1940s and even acted in a few of them. He may be no more but his movies continues to live on. They showed one of his movies in Raj TV last Sunday. My wife's grandmother stayed glued to the through the entire, obviously very proud of her father.
It's amazing how we continue to learn interesting titbits about our family.

Bangalore Marathon Bloggers MeetThanks to
Anita Bora's intitiative, there's a BMBM meet happening on the second weekend of this month, coinciding with the Bangalore International Marathon. I've personally known quite a few guys there and look forward to touching base again. Can't wait to meet the new folks.
It's very heartening to see some of the Bangalore blogger folks come out to cheer and support the runners during the marathon. That's pretty swank.
This will also be my first blog meet outside of Chennai. I'm looking at picking up a few tips for
Ramya's article for the Hindu on Blog Meets.

The No Computer, No Internet, No Blog WeekendGosh! Don't remember the last time I plugged myself out completely. Can't say it was totally enjoyable. I did miss checking my emails. We visited a relative's place and it was totally lazing around time.
