Attending ComicCon 2012

I was absolutely thrilled that there’s a ComicCon happening in India. I knew a series of these special conventions for comcics takes place in the US but never thought India had the market or the Interest for it. Boy, was I wrong!

Form what I hear the first edition was a big success and the second one in February 2012 at New Delhi is going to be even better. Its didn’t take me long to make my mind to attend this event. I’ve blocked my dates already.

It’ll be a great opportunity to meet creators, publishers and collectors from the comics industry. They are such a creative lot and am excited to be part of the community.

Time to Buy the Limca Book of Records

When I was 12 years old, I bought my first ‘Guinness World Records’ book. It was a very thick paperback and was fascinated with all the things that people did. Strangely enough, I was never motivated to attempt anything to get into that list.

Now, I’m 38 years old and itching to try. The good thing about growing old is you know that time is running out and its now or never. You have nothing to lose and you are no longer afraid of failing.

And so, I’m gunning for a record. It’s not the Guinness. I’m a pragmatic guy. I know what’s out of my reach when I see one. So, I’m setting my eyes on the Limca Book of Records.

What am I gonna do? Well, I’ll tell you Monday. But meanwhile, I must go to a bookstore and buy myself a copy of the Limca Book of Records…just like how I bought the Guiness Book of Records when I was 12 years old !

FearlessFour on Wheelchairs Traveling Across 30 Indian States

Beyond Barriers is an incredible journey in 80 days through 30 States and Union Territories of India kick-started by Arvind Prabhoo, Sunita Sancheti, Nishant Khade and Neenu Kewlani.

The four of them are enterprising individuals who inspite of their disabilities are striving to see members of the society like them being given equal oppurtunity in Travel and Tourism.

The basic motivation behind this tour is to make the destinations of tourist interest in each state accessible to People with Disabilities (PwD’s), senior citizens, pregnant women & temporarily injured. Thus making India an accessible tourist destination for ALL.

Beyond Barriers is a daring initiative under the aegis of Vijay Merchant Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled (VMRCD). The organization firmly believes in seeing India, our beautiful country as a barrier free nation and making it a tourist destination for all. It is an effort to truly treat all as equal.

TEDxWWW : Global Get-together of TEDx Organizers

One of the best news I have heard today is the announcement of an awesome event, the TEDxWWW. The ‘WWW’ expands to World Wide Workshop, a global event exclusively for the TEDx Organizers around the world.

Ever since I started becoming active in the TEDx community, one of the things that puts me in awe is TED’s ability to think big. Pulling together an event for TEDx organizers around the World is no joke. There are over 2000 TEDx events in almost every country around the World.

Let me tell you why I respect this event so much. In India, there have been discussions within the TEDx organizers community to have one national event which brings together all the TEDx organizers. This brings in the challenge of fixing a date that is comfortable for everyone, fixing a venue that’s easy for people to get to, organizing stay, working out the logistics and much more. While organizing a TEDx event in the city is an effort, it takes even greater effort to pull together a national event. The geographical distance and the ability to make it easy for everyone to come will be key.

Now to see someone do the same event but on a Worldwide scale deserves my utmost respect. This is one MASSIVE event. Kudos to the TED staff, members of Doha Film Institute and the TEDx volunteers.

TEDxWWW, hosted by the Doha Film Institute, is a three-day event convening in Doha, Qatar, and commencing on April 16th, 2012. According to TED website, TEDxWWW will be a private event, open only to members of the global TEDx community, together with the TED team. It will be an opportunity to connect, share best practices, discuss local and regional strategies and brainstorm new ideas and collaborations.

TEDxDoha, curated by TED, DFI and the global TEDx community, will take place on April 20, immediately following TEDxWWW. The event will feature speakers and performers from the Middle Eastern region as well as other parts of the world, recommended by the TEDx community.

Teaching a 4 Months Course on Entrepreneurship & Media Management at Anna University

I first started teaching as a visiting faculty at College of Engineering, Guindy at Anna University in 2001.  That stint still continues.  Today, the University approached me to conduct a 4 month course on ‘Entrepreneurship and Media Management‘ for the final year students of M.Sc Electronic Media from the Department of Media Studies.

It’s the longest engagement that I had committed to the University. Never before have I taken a course for 4 months. Most of my previous engagements were guest lectures, the longest lasting  a week.

At first, I hesitated. It was too heavy a commitment.  Teaching, never is and never will be, a good paying proposition. At best, its a distraction from my professional work. Something that’s best avoided.

But then, I have an emotional connection with Dept of Media Studies. I have been associated with them for 10 years and stuck a strong rapport with the professors and faculty. Some of the faculty members right now are my old students.   Besides, the smartest students from the class every year intern at my place and it has been a very mutual relationship. I had to give back to the department in my own way and what better way than sharing your knowledge.

I said yes.  But on the condition that I will invite experts who I feel are the best in the field to join with me in teaching. This is not something that other teachers do. But I was clear. Only professionals in a particular area should teach a particular subject.  The university accepted my proposal. So, as I proceed to teach in the next 16 weeks, I will look up for professionals and interested folks who enjoy teaching to invite to the university.

Take a look at the course outline below. If any of these falls in your area of expertise and interest, please let me know.  We should certainly talk.

As you can see, there are many areas that are far beyond my capability level. There are many who are professionals in these areas and it really makes sense for the students to learn from the right professional.

The problem with the current study system is that the academic staff with almost zero work experience teach these subjects. You can’t blame them either. That’s the way the system exists.  Here is where I see us contributing the most.  We can make a difference by identifying the right professional for the right subject and connect them with the students. I truly want to make this count.

The course starts from July 1st week. Every Tuesday Afternoons from 1:30 pm to 4:30pm. A guest lecture can last anywhere from half hour to 3 hours. Quite flexible.

So, if you love teaching and if any of these areas are your passion, I would love to connect up. Am available at 098415 97744 and Kiruba(@)Kiruba.com
