Film producer G.V committed suicide today and it’s sad that such an entrepresing man had to meet a tragic end. He is better known as the brother of ace director Manirathnam and produced many of his hit movies like Roja and Thalapathi. About six months ago, I had a chance to meet him in person for over two hours as part of the “Meet the Business Press”. G.V was a chain smoker and his smoking habits somehow revealed the financial burden that he was reeling under. His latest movies had bombed in the box office. Inspite of all his problems, he spoke quite eloqently about the status of the film industry and even frankly revealed some untold insider information as well.

One reason for his suicide could be attributed to Michael Jackson. G.V had been the main organiser of the much hyped MJ’s show in India and was severely hurt financially when MJ cancelled the tour because of child abuse allegations. In addition to this loss, he lost even more tyring to sue MJ.That’s when his downslide started. He burnt his hands bad when he bought the Internet rights for over 2000 movies to be broadcast to Indians globall over the Net..but sadly broadband didn’t take off as expected.

But you gotto to hand it to him for bringing some semblance of professionalism to film production. His company was the first film production firm in India to go public. One of the guys I admired is now gone.

Migration to New Blogger : The Blogger folks have started accepting the migration of your blogs from the present version to the new Blogger version a.k.a Dano. Just note that they are still in testing phase and this switch over is a one-way process. I wanted to switch over but sadly they don’t support Active FTP which means I will have to start using sFTP, their own FTP program. Didn’t like that. So dropped the migration plan.

I’m terribly dissappointed with the quality of shoes. I have walked into Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Bata showrooms but can’t find one proper pair of running shoes. Sure, they are expensive and good looking but not appropriate for running long distance. What’s important is the soft cushioning sole that absorbs the relentless pounding but…sigh! none seem to have it. I was shocked to find one particular Nike pair which had a layer made of hard plywood. Holy crap! I finally settled for a bad looking adidas which had the better cushioning amongst the lot.

My home is stone’s throw from the Film Director’s Colony in Kodambakkam. In addition to Directors, there’s a whole bunch of technicians, cameramen, second rung actors and other film related professionals to be seen around. Incase you didn’t know, Kodambakkam is the reason why the tamil film industry is called Kollywood! If you listen carefully to people’s conversations while at restraurants or while shopping at grocery stores, you get hold of some real juicy gossips about actors and actresses.

Today is a holiday. And it happens to be a thursday….which reminds me so much of my school days in Pondicherry. Back then, when I was studying in Petit Seminaire, we used to have weekly holidays on thursdays and sundays. I particularly like this concept because you don’t have to stare at a long week ahead on monday mornings.
