Prerna Gupta of Yaari.com Competing with Orkut

Will an Indian social networking site succeed against Orkut?

In this episode, we have Prerna Gupta, founder and CEO of Yaari.com – a new social networking site that claims to be “created by Indian youth, for Indian youth”. (Yaari means friendship)

At a time when the social networking space is getting increasingly crowded, we ask her why she decided to jump in now, and how she intends to go up against Orkut.

Prerna Gupta graduated from Stanford University and worked in a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley prior to founding Yaari.com. Prerna is of Indian origin but has lived all her life in the US. We ask her if that’s an impediment for her venture. Listen up.

Sridhar Vembu on Zoho’s Future Plans and Threat from Google

It’s not easy taking on the mighty Google. So, when you come across a man who has the guts to do that, you can’t help but admire the man’s spirit. Dr. Sridhar Vembu is the founder and CEO of AdventNet, the company behind the Zoho suite of services, a direct competition to Google’s hosted suite of office products.

He attended Indian Institute of Technology in Madras for his undergraduate degree and Princeton University for his PhD.

Is Guruji the new Google for India

Anurag Dod is the CEO and founder of Guruji.com, the latest India-based search engine.

Recently, Guruji secured an investment of $7 million from Sequoia Capital, the same investors who backed Google.com.

Anurag has more than years of extensive software engineering experience, including key contributions to two successful startups. As an engineering manager in Wisenut Search Engine, he was instrumental in developing its core search technology and has a patent pending for that. Wisenut was acquired by LookSmart in 2002. He also held senior engineering positions in eBay, Synopsis and Delsoft. Anurag holds BTech in eclectrical engineering from IIT Delhi and a Masters in computer science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

In this interview, Anurag explains the need for a local search engine like Guruji and how it plans to take on the might of Google.

The Kiruba Show: IAMAI President Subho Ray on India’s Internet

When will Indian cities be WiFied? What is the true number of Internet users in India? When will India reach the 100 million Internet users mark? In this episode, Internet & Mobile Association of India President Subho Ray answers these questions and more.

Established in 2004, IAMAI is the only industry association in India representing the collective voice and interests of the online and mobile content industry.

As president, Subho heads the permanent secretariat of the association and is currently responsible for conceptualizing and implementing the association’s activities around regulatory affairs, industry standards, research, communications and promotional events.

Before joining IAMAI, Subho was the director for the ICT vertical at the Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi, where he worked since 1998.

His other significant roles in CII have been as head of Internal Communications and an overseas stint at the Confederation’s London office.

Subho has also taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies at University of London and worked as a research assistant at the Indian Council for Historical Research, New Delhi.

He read history at Presidency College, Kolkata and Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi and received his PhD from the University of London.

He has also co-authored the history of CII which will soon be published in India by Penguin.

In 2002, SSI decided to shut down 3rd agenda as part of its restructuring, and that’s when Ganesh founded Xerago, which rightly means ‘Second coming’. Since then, there’s been no looking back as Xerago has attracted big ticket clients. Currently, the company is 100 people strong.

In this freewheeling interview, Ganesh talks about his company, his business model and his interests.
